I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth, and in in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; He descended into Hell; on the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into Heaven, sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

    1. Jesus leads His disciples to Gethsemani and enters the garden. That His Passion begins in a garden is most fitting because He, the New Adam, is atoning for the sin of our first parents that likewise took place in a garden. 

    2. Jesus says to his disciples, “Sit you here, till I go yonder and pray.” He takes with Him Peter, James, and John, and says to them, “My soul is sorrowful even until death.”

    3. Jesus tells the three to stay there and watch with Him. Peter echoes this sentiment in his first epistle: “Be sober and watch: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, goeth about seeking whom he may devour.”

    4. Christ kneels down prostrating Himself in prayer, and in His sorrow His sweat becomes as drops of blood trickling down upon the ground.

    5. His natural flesh shrinking from the death and torments He is voluntarily about to undergo, Christ prays, “Father, if Thou wilt, remove this chalice from Me: but yet not My will, but Thine be done.” Here He teaches us that our sole remedy in affliction is submission to the Divine will.

    6. Jesus sorrows for the sins of all men and for the ingratitude of sinners “for He foresaw His death would be of use to but very few and that the many would be lost through their own negligence and ingratitude.”

    7. An angel appears to Him from heaven, strengthening Him with words such as “O Lord, Thine is the strength, for thou art powerful against death and hell, to set free the race of men.” 

    8. Jesus finding His disciples asleep says, “Could you not watch one hour with me? Watch ye, and pray that ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh weak.”

    9. Jesus is betrayed by Judas, one whom He had called His friend, saying to him, “Is it with a kiss you betray the Son of man?”

    10. Jesus’s disciples all flee, and the multitude with swords and clubs cruelly bind Him and lead Him away.

  • 1.  Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemani...and he began to experience sorrow and distress.

    2.  Then he said to them, "My heart is nearly broken with sorrow.  Remain here and stay awake with me."

    3.  He withdrew from them and knelt down and prayed.  (Lk. 22:41)  - Hail Mary...

    4.  "Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me.  Still, let it be as you would have it, not as I."  (Mt. 26:39)

    5.  When he returned to his disciples, he found them asleep.  He said to Peter,  "So you could not stay awake
    with me for even an hour?  Be on guard and pray that you may not undergo the test.  The spirit is willing, but
    nature is weak."  (Mt. 26: 40-42)  - Hail Mary...

    6.  In his anguish, he prayed more earnestly.  An angel appeared to him, coming from Heaven to give him
    strength.  (Lk. 22: 44,43)  - Hail Mary...

    7.  "The hour is on us when the Son of Man is to be handed over to the power of evil men."  (Mt. 26:45)
    - Hail Mary...

    8.  While he was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, arrived accompanied by a great crowd with swords and
    clubs.  (Mt. 26: 47)  - Hail Mary...

    9.  He immediately went over to Jesus, said to him, "Peace, Rabbi," and embraced him.  (Mt. 26: 49)

    10.  Jesus answered, "Friend, do what you are here for."  At that moment they stepped forward to lay hand on
    Jesus and arrest Him.  (Mt. 26: 50)  - Hail Mary...

    1. That morning, the chief priests and the ancients take council against Jesus, conspiring how they may put Him to death, not by mere stoning, which was their typical practice, but by the most infamous means of crucifixion. 

    2. Prophecy in the book of Wisdom is fulfilled: “He calleth himself the son of God…and glorieth that he hath God for his father. Let us see then if his words be true…Let us examine him by outrages and tortures, that we may know his meekness, and try his patience. Let us condemn him to a most shameful death.”

    3. Many false witnesses are brought forward, but their evidence is not in agreement. Some spit on Him, strike Him, and mock Him. [4*]

    4. “I have given my body to the strikers, and my cheeks to them that plucked my beard: I have not turned away my face from them that rebuked me and spit upon me.”

    5. The Jews take Jesus before Pontius Pilate who questions Him. Pilate says to the chief priest and the multitude that he can find no fault in Him.

    6. In order to appease the Jews and hoping they will no longer seek His death, Pilate has Jesus brutally scourged.

    7. The Roman scourge, also called the flagellum, made of leather and sharp bones, is a greatly feared punishment designed to quickly remove the flesh from the body of the victim.

    8. Jesus is bound to a pillar and is scourged from head to foot, His flesh lacerated and torn, exposing His muscles, and producing excessive loss of blood. [5*]

    9. Jesus suffers this abuse especially for the sins of the flesh, those committed against chastity and purity.

    10. Christ fulfills the prophecy of Isaias: “He was wounded for our iniquities, He was bruised for our sins…The Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all.”

  • 1.  As soon as it was daybreak, the chief priests, with the elders and scribes, reached a decision.  They bound
    Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate.  Pilate interrogated him: "Are you the king of the Jews?"  
    (Mk. 15: 1-2)  - Hail Mary...

    2.  Jesus answered, "My Kingdom does not belong to this world"...At this, Pilate said to him, "So then you are a
    king?"  Jesus replied, "It is you who say I am a king.  The reason I was born, the reason why I came into the
    world is to testify to the truth.  Anyone committed to the truth, hears my voice."  (Jn. 18:36-37)  - Hail Mary...

    3.  This much only will I say, "From now on, the Son of Man will have his seat at the right hand of the Power of
    God."  (Lk. 22: 69)  - Hail Mary...

    4.  "So you are the Son of God?"  they asked in chorus.  He answered, "It is you who say that I am."  (Lk. 22: 70)  
    - Hail Mary...

    5.  Pilate's next move was to take Jesus and have him scourged.  (Jn. 19:1)  - Hail Mary...

    6.  Despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows. (Is. 53: 3)  - Hail Mary...

    7.  And yet, ours were the sufferings he bore.  (Is. 53: 4)  - Hail Mary...

    8.  He was pierced through for our faults, crushed for our sins.  (Is. 53: 5)  - Hail Mary...

    9.  They blindfolded him first, slapped him and then taunted him.  (Lk. 22: 64)  - Hail Mary...

    10.  And after he had Jesus scourged, Pilate handed him over to be crucified.  (Mk. 15: 15)  - Hail Mary...

    1. Pilate asks Jesus if He is a king, to which He responds, “Thou sayest it…For this was I born, and for this came I into the world; that I should give testimony to the truth. Every one that is of the truth, heareth my voice.”

    2. The soldiers gather together their whole band and taking Jesus into the praetorium, strip Him, and put a purple cloak on Him to deride His claim of kingship.

    3. Fashioning a crown of sharp thorns made of three twisted branches with the greatest number of thorns purposely facing inward, they force it onto His sacred head. [6]

    4. They place a reed into His right hand, and bowing their knees before Him, they mock Him saying, “Hail, king of the Jews.”

    5. Spitting upon Him, they take the reed from His hand, and strike Him in the head. As they drive the crown more deeply into His scalp, His Blood flows down His face.

    6. “This shameful scene was protracted a full half-hour, and the Roman soldiers continued during the whole time to applaud and encourage the perpetration of still greater outrages.” [7]

    7. Jesus undergoes these most terrible humiliations to atone in a special way for sins of pride.

    8. The Roman soldiers then remove the cloak and put His own garments back on Him. “Why then is thy apparel red, and thy garments like theirs that tread in the winepress?”

    9. In hopes to quell their wrath, Pilate brings Jesus before the crowd, covered in blood and wounds, and says, “Ecce Homo” (Behold the man).

    10. The chief priests, who delivered Him up out of envy, move the people to cry out loudly, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!” Pilate washes his hands, claims to be innocent of His blood, and hands Jesus over to be crucified. 

  • 1.  The soldiers now led Jesus away into the hall known as the Praetorium; at the time they assembled the
    whole cohort.  (Mk. 15: 16)  - Hail Mary...

    2.  They dressed him in royal purple, then wove a crown of thorns and put it on him.  (Mk. 15: 17)
    - Hail Mary...

    3.  They began to salute him, All hail!  King of the Jews!  (Mk. 15: 18)  - Hail Mary...

    4.  Continually striking Jesus on the head with a reed and spitting at him, they genuflected before him and
    pretended to pay him homage.  (Mk. 15: 19)  - Hail Mary...

    5.  Pilate said to the crowd:  "Observe what I do.  I am going to bring him out to you to make you realize that I
    find no case against him."  (Jn. 19: 4)  - Hail Mary...

    6.  When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple cloak, Pilate said to them, "Look at the
    man!"  (John 19: 5)  - Hail Mary...

    7.  As soon as the chief priests and the temple guards saw him they shouted, "Crucify him! Crucify him!"
    (Jn. 19: 6)  - Hail Mary...

    8.  "Why, what crime has he committed?"  asked Pilate.  They only shouted the louder, "Crucify him!"
    (Mk. 15: 14)  - Hail Mary...

    9.  Pilate said to the Jews, "Look at your king!"  (Jn. 19: 14)  - Hail Mary...

    10.  In the end, Pilate handed Jesus over to be crucified.  (Jn. 19: 16)  - Hail Mary...

    1. When our divine Savior beholds the Cross He most willingly stretches out His bleeding arms, lovingly embraces it, and tenderly kisses it. Placing it on His bruised shoulders, He joyfully begins to carry it.

    2. Weakened from losing a great quantity of blood, scarcely able to walk, and repeatedly struck cruelly by His executioners, Jesus falls three times under the weight of the heavy Cross.

    3. Our Lord’s most grievous wound of His shoulder , on which He bears the crushing burden of His heavy Cross, so tears His flesh and lays bare His bones as to inflict on Him an anguish greater than any other wound on His Most Sacred Body. 

    4. “Our sins and misdeeds were the heavy burden which oppressed Him: the Cross was to Him light and sweet, but our sins were galling and insupportable.” 

    5. Jesus meets His afflicted Mother on the road causing unspeakable pangs. Their looks become as arrows to wound those hearts which loved each other so tenderly. 

    6. Seeing with each step Jesus from weakness was on the point of expiring and fearing He might die on the way, the soldiers force Simon of Cyrene to help carry Jesus’ Cross behind Him. Jesus accepts His assistance, as He also permits us to carry the Cross after Him.

    7. “If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” “Whosoever doth not carry his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.”

    8. The holy woman Veronica, seeing Jesus so afflicted, His face bathed in sweat and blood, impelled by devotion and compassion, presents her veil to Jesus to wipe His adorable face. Jesus imprints on her veil the image of His sacred countenance.

    9. Jesus speaks to the women who wept with compassion after seeing Him in such a pitiable state, streaming with blood. “Weep not over me; but weep for yourselves, and for your children.”

    10. When Jesus arrives at Golgotha, the place of Adam’s skull, He is violently stripped, His inner garments adhering to His lacerated Flesh and pulled off so roughly that the skin came with them.

  • 1.  When they had finished making a fool of him, they stripped Jesus of the cloak, dressed him in his own
    clothes, and led him off to crucifixion.  (Mt. 27: 31)  - Hail Mary...

    2.  On their way out they met a Cyrenian named Simon.  This man they pressed into service to carry the cross.  
    (Mt. 27: 32) - Hail Mary...

    3.  A great crowd of people followed him, including women who beat their breasts and lamented over him.
    (Lk. 23: 27)  - Hail Mary...

    4.  Jesus turned to them and said:  "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me.  Weep for yourselves and for
    your children."  (Lk. 23: 28)  - Hail Mary...

    5.  Two others who were criminals were led along with him to be crucified.  (Lk. 23: 32)  - Hail Mary...

    6.  Upon arriving at the site called Golgotha, (a name which means Skull Place), they gave him a drink of wine
    flavored with gall, which he tasted but refused to drink.  (Mt. 27: 33-34)  - Hail Mary...

    7.  When they had crucified him, they divided his clothes among them by casting lots;  then they sat down there
    and kept watch over him.  (Mt. 27: 35-36)  - Hail Mary...

    8.  "Whoever wishes to be my follower must deny his very self."  (Lk. 9: 23)  - Hail Mary...

    9.  "He must take up his cross every day and follow in my steps."  (Lk. 9: 23)  - Hail Mary...

    10. "Whoever would save his life will lose it, whoever loses his life for my sake, will save it."  (Lk. 9: 24)

Our Father

Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  Amen. 

Pater noster, qui es in cælis, sanctificétur nomen tuum. Advéniat regnum tuum, fiat volúntas tua, sicut in cælo, et in terra.     1. Jesus is thrown down upon the Cross and stretches out His arms, offering the Sacrifice of His life for our salvation. His hands and feet are pierced with large iron nails, fastening and uniting Him to the wood of this tree.

    2. “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” – Here He leads by example, “Love your enemies: do good to them that hate you: and pray for them that persecute and calumniate you.”

    3. The repentant thief requests, “Lord remember me when Thou shalt come into Thy kingdom.” Jesus responds, “Amen I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with Me in paradise.” – “Happy wert thou, O holy thief, who hadst the fortune to unite thy death to the death of thy Savior.”

    4. “Woman, behold your son. Son, behold your Mother.” – By calling her “Woman,” He connects Mary as the New Eve who crushes the head of the serpent. The Son here gives Mary to the Church as Mother. 

    5. In a loud voice Jesus announces the beginning of the Messianic Psalm about Him: “My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?” – “They have pierced my hands and my feet…” “They parted my garments among them…” 

    6. His words, “I thirst” mystically represent His thirst for the salvation of souls. “No man cometh to the Father, but by Me.”

    7. “It is consummated.” – In this He encourages, “he that shall persevere unto the end, he shall be saved.”

    8. Jesus cries in a loud voice, “Father, into Thy hands I commend My spirit.” Then bowing His head, He dies. 

    9. The side of Jesus is pierced with a lance from which flow both Blood and Water, representing the sacraments of baptism and the Eucharist. His side becomes the entry into the Church and is as the door to the Ark of Noah. 

    10. His body is taken down and placed in the arms of His afflicted Mother. She receives Him with unutterable tenderness and presses Him to her bosom close to her Immaculate Heart. 

  • 1.  Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, they do not know what they are doing."  (Lk. 23: 32)  - Hail Mary...

    2.  One of the criminals said:  "Jesus, remember me when you enter upon your reign."  And Jesus replied, "I
    assure you; this day you will be with me in paradise."  (Lk. 23: 42-43)  - Hail Mary...

    3.  Seeing his mother there with the disciple whom he loved, Jesus said to his mother, "Woman, there is your
    son."  (Jn. 19: 26)  - Hail Mary...

    4.  In turn he said to the disciple, "There is your Mother."  From that hour onward, the disciple took her into his
    care.  (Jn. 19: 27)  - Hail Mary...

    5.  Then toward mid-afternoon, Jesus cried out in a loud tone, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"  
    (Mt. 27: 46)  - Hail Mary...

    6.  Jesus realizing that everything was now finished, said to fulfill the Scriptures, "I am thirsty."  There was a jar
    there, full of common wine.  They stuck a sponge soaked in this wine on a stick, and raised it to his lips.
    (Jn. 19: 28)  - Hail Mary...

    7.  When Jesus took the wine, He said, "Now it is finished."  (Jn. 19: 30)  - Hail Mary...

    8.  Jesus uttered a loud cry and said, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit."  After he said this, he
    expired.  (Lk. 23: 46)  - Hail Mary...

    9.  Darkness came over the whole land until midafternoon with an eclipse of the sun.  The curtain in the
    sanctuary was torn in two.  (Lk. 23: 44-45)  - Hail Mary...

    10. They took Jesus' body, and in accordance with Jewish burial custom, bound it up in wrappings of cloth with
    perfumed oils.  (Jn. 19: 40)  - Hail Mary...

Glory Be

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost. As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.

St. Joseph Terror of Demons

Saint Joseph, Terror of Demons, cast thy solemn gaze upon the devil and all his minions and protect us with thy mighty staff. Thou fled through the night to avoid the devil’s wicked designs; now with the power of God, smite the demons as they flee from thee! Grant special protection, we pray, for children, fathers, mothers, families, and the dying. By God’s grace, no demon dares approach while thou art near, so we beg of thee, Saint Joseph, always be near to us! Amen.

An Act of Petition

ADORABLE Saviour, "in whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, and all the fulness of the Godhead dwelleth corporally", consider my many wants, and grant me those graces which Thou knowest I stand in need of to do Thy will in all things. Thou knowest my weakness and the necessity which I endure; in how great evils and vices I am immersed; how often I am oppressed, tempted, troubled and defiled. To Thee I come for remedy. I pray to Thee for comfort and succour. I speak to Him that knows all things; to whom all that is within me is manifest, and who alone can perfectly comfort and help me. Thou knowest what good things I stand most in need of, and how poor I am in virtues. Behold, I stand before Thee, poor and naked, begging Thy grace, and imploring Thy mercy. Feed Thy hungry suppliant; inflame my coldness with the fire of Thy love: enlighten my blindness with the brightness of Thy presence.

End of Rosary Prayer

O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant, we beseech Thee, that meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ Our Lord.
